A critical review of the literature. OA Orthopaedics 2013 May 01;1(1):2. Abstract Introduction A post-operative periprosthetic infection of total knee replacement (TKR) is one of the most devastating complications for a patient to endure after surgery and is a challenge for the orthopaedic surgeon to treat. In this paper, we present the current evidence to support a single-stage revision of a TKR for periprosthetic infection and compare the outcome with that of a two-stage revision procedure. In addition, we also outline the methods of diagnosis used to identify a periprosthetic infection of a TKR. Conclusion The current evidence-based surgical options to manage periprosthetic infection do not offer a 100% guarantee of eradication of the infection. As to whether a singleor a two-stage procedure should be undertaken needs to be personalized to each patient and their circumstances.

Knee Fusion or Above-The-Knee Amputation after Failed Two-Stage Reimplantation Total Knee Arthroplasty
Prosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a serious complication of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Control of infection after a failed two-stage TKA is not always possible, and the resolution of infection may require an above-knee amputation (AKA) or a the-knee (KF). The purpose of this review is to determine which treatment method (AKA or KF) yields better function and ambulatory status for patients...

The aim of this review article is to analyze the clinical effectiveness of total knee replacement (TKR) compared to unicompartmental knee replacement (UKR) in patients with medial unicompartmental osteoarthritis (MUO) in terms of survival rates, revision rates and postoperative complications. The search engine was MedLine. The keywords used were: medial knee osteoarthritis. Three thousand and n...
متن کاملPartial 2-Stage Revision in Chronic Hip Arthroplasty Infections: A Review
Background: Periprosthetic hip infections (PHIs) are troublesome complications of hip arthroplasties. The gold standard procedure for treating chronic PHI is a 2-stage approach. Recently, however, more conservative approaches have been developed to spare the osseointegrated components and avoid sequestra, bone loss, devascularization, and difficult reconstructions. The partial ...
متن کاملA Critical Review of Proximal Fibular Osteotomy for Knee Osteoarthritis
The surgical management of Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA), so far, mainly revolved around arthroscopic procedures, arthroplasty (total: TKA and unicompartmental: UKA) or high tibial osteotomy (HTO). Recently, another minimallyinvasive surgical treatment of proximal fibular osteotomy (PFO) has been proposed for the management of KOA. ThePFO has been found to be useful in the manageme...
متن کاملIs Single-stage Revision Safe Following Infected Total Knee Arthroplasty? A Critical Review
With the improvement in outcomes and modern prosthesis design, total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has now become a commonly performed surgery. It is postulated that a total of 2-5% of the primary and revision TKA becomes infected every year, requiring a revision procedure which to date is the conventional two-stage revision. The diagnosis and treatment of these periprosthetic infections is a major a...
